Full-time possible for a nature-based educator

"Curiosity is the engine of achievement." — Sir Ken Robinson

Are you a science or maths teacher who wants to do more than work through a syllabus? Do you want your subject to feel alive — connected to the real world, to real questions, and to students who are genuinely curious? If you are ready for a school that will give you the space and support to teach the way you have always believed you should, read on.

The role

This is not a role for someone who wants to close the door and deliver lessons in isolation. You will be a genuine collaborator — working with other educators to connect science and maths to school-wide projects, bringing your subject to life through real experiments and outdoor learning, and helping shape a curriculum that puts sustainability and regeneration at its heart.

You will also work with our lead maths curriculum designer to develop and implement a maths curriculum that is rigorous, progressive, and genuinely engaging.

We are looking for a Science & Maths Teacher to work with our middle school learners aged 11–14. This is a part-time role — though if you are also a passionate nature-based educator, a full-time position is possible.

About REAL School Budapest

REAL School Budapest is an international school for changemakers — a place where about a hundred students from over 25 nationalities, ages 5–14, learn through real life, real projects, and real relationships. We follow the English National Curriculum for academic mastery, and our Dream-to-Reality (D2R) programme for putting that knowledge to work: students identify real problems, design real solutions, and present them to real audiences.

We describe ourselves as a regenerative school. For us, that means education that doesn’t just sustain the world as it is, but actively works to repair and improve it — starting with how we treat each other, how we relate to the natural world, and how we help children see themselves as people who can make things better.

We were inspired by Green School Bali, where our founding team previously worked, and we’ve built something distinctly urban and European in the heart of Budapest. We run as a TEAL organisation — with distributed leadership, high trust, and very little hierarchy. If you’ve been waiting for a school where your voice actually shapes things, this is it.

Our mission is to inspire and empower the next generation to dream and build a beautiful world.

AI at REAL School — what this means for you as a teacher

We believe that in a world of intelligent machines, the human edge matters more than ever: the capacity to connect, to create, to care, and to lead. AI is deeply embedded in how we work at REAL School — but always in service of that human edge, not instead of it.

In practice, this means:

+       AI handles the routine — freeing you to focus on the quality of learning and the depth of your relationships with students

+       We use AI to build richer, more ambitious projects and to strengthen assessment, so your planning time is spent on what matters

+       Students learn to be fluent, critical users of AI — knowing how to use it well, and when not to. In science, that might mean using AI to model data from a real experiment, then interrogating what the model gets wrong

+       You will work at the genuine leading edge of what AI makes possible in education, in a school that has thought carefully about why and how

+       You do not need to arrive as an AI expert. You need to arrive curious, open, and keen to grow — and we will grow together

Key responsibilities

Bring science to life through real experiments — be the scientist in the room

Use technology, including AI, to deepen learning and improve your practice

Develop the school’s science curriculum with a focus on sustainability and regeneration

Work with the lead maths curriculum designer to improve and implement the maths curriculum

Teach core science and maths concepts aligned with the English National Curriculum

Connect science and maths to school-wide cross-curricular projects

Use diagnostic and formative data to meet the differentiated needs of your students

Guide students in building personal portfolios that showcase their growth and projects

Encourage learning in outdoor and shared spaces where the natural world is the classroom

Engage parents through regular, meaningful communication

Collaborate with colleagues to support interdisciplinary, entrepreneurial learning through UbD best practices

Contribute to after-school activities and supervision duties

Qualifications and experience

Essential

3+ years of teaching science and maths to ages 11–14

A teaching qualification or Master’s degree in Education

A passion for regeneration, social impact, and progressive education

Native or near-native English proficiency with strong communication skills

A track record of working with culturally and linguistically diverse students

Resilience, adaptability, and a collaborative mindset

Demonstrated use of innovative teaching practices and educational technology

Alignment with our school values, including support for our plant-based meal approach, a commitment to equity, and a genuine care for the environment

Desirable

       Experience with project-based learning

Curiosity about AI and its role in education

Experience with outdoor or nature-based learning

Personal qualities

You are a natural collaborator who brings energy and rigour to your subject in equal measure

You are excited by the idea of teaching science and maths as living, relevant disciplines — not abstract bodies of content to be transmitted and tested

You are adaptable, growth-oriented, and genuinely committed to the kind of education that prepares young people for the world they are actually inheriting

Safeguarding and inclusion

All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply. REAL School Budapest is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children. Applicants must be willing to undergo child protection screening, including references from previous employers. What we offer

A genuine opportunity to co-create progressive education in an ambitious, values-driven school

Fair compensation in a city where the cost of living is significantly lower than in Western Europe or the Gulf

Free plant-based meals every day from our on-site canteen, the Planteen — the first plant-based canteen in Europe

A working culture built on trust, distributed leadership, and professional autonomy

Ongoing development in PBL, AI-integrated teaching, and regenerative education

A small, international team of educators who are here because they believe in this

Membership of a community of changemakers — students, families, and colleagues included

Why Budapest?

Budapest is one of Europe’s most liveable cities. In 2024, the Economist Intelligence Unit named it the most liveable city in Eastern Europe, as well as one of the top five most improved cities on the planet.

A rich cultural life, excellent food, and easy access to the rest of Europe are all part of everyday life here. The city has a growing international community, a vibrant arts and tech scene, and a warmth that surprises most newcomers. It is safe, beautiful, and endlessly interesting. Many of our team came for a year and are still here.
